Andy Goldsworthy and related thoughts

listening to: Terra Naomi "Say It's Possible"
thinking about: the two people I dreamed about last night, scheduling workout time, mural ideas for a pastel yellow wall
thanking Him for: fresh dfw rain, Appa being home, everything my boss teaches me, 2 Peter 1:5-9 & accountability, art

my boss introduced me to the British artist Andy Goldsworthy yesterday.

transience, ruthlessness, surrender, flow
Watched "Rivers and Tides" (documentary about his work) this morning at Panera, definitely need to watch it over again when my eye isn't hurting and I'm not in a rush.
In one part, he crushes a rock to create clouds of red in the water and later in the air. The iron that makes the rock, now flowing down the river, red is the same iron that makes the blood flowing in us red. I guess I'm losing how powerful what he said sounded, but I loved that.
There's something incredibly raw and powerful about his work that reminds me of Maya Lin's work. We talked a little about her work after I mentioned that.
In short, I admire her even more now.

Art makes a difference.
And I think learning how to talk about art will help me understand and talk about many more deeply meaningful things.

what an awesome job

Torbit (funky name, I like it) is a Pixar Set Dresser; she chooses and places props in every scene of the movie in a way that best reflects and supports the characters. Never knew such a position in animation existed, but it sounds awesome.

"Actually, I’ve been interested in set dressing since I was a very little kid. I was constantly moving furniture around in my Barbie™ townhouse, but I never played with the dolls. I would create different scenarios within the environments and would photograph the different ways I dressed the rooms. I’d also take photos of things in disarray around my house (like a messy room). I was studying the way people interact with their environments without even knowing it.

Another thing I did as a kid was make drawings of the sets for movies and TV shows I liked. I redesigned the sets on Diff’rent Strokes and The Brady Bunch a few times. You know how it was never really clear where the father’s office was in The Brady Brunch? I’d always figure out when the sets weren’t set up right because I figured out which door was not matching up. Same thing with Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. I was looking for continuity even then
."

haha I used to try to figure out Arthur's house's floor plan and continuity goofs too and play with dolls for the sake of rearranging their houses. And pay close attention to people's living spaces (still do). It's probably hard to get and not the most high-paying, but if I ever ditch architecture (highly doubt it haha but just sayin')...this sounds like a pretty neat job.
